Pupils at a primary school learned about a traditional art form to create a striking sculpture made by willow weaving.

The youngsters at St Philip’s CE Primary School in Atherton teamed up with an artist to create the finished piece, which has a design invented by the youngsters themselves. The sculpture will be placed in the community garden maintained by a team of volunteers from Atherton Environmental Projects near the Bolton Road school. The garden is also home to a metal sculpture of a blue bell created by Up Holland blacksmith Jake Schorah, commemorating the history of the area which previously had a school and pub of that name. The green space will also be entered into In Bloom this year.
