WORK to repair a railway bridge in Golborne will start next week.

A recent inspection carried out by Wigan Council found that sections of concrete on Golborne railway bridge on the A580 East Lancashire Road have cracked due to water damage. Work to repair the bridge will begin on Monday and will last for approximately ten weeks.

Councillor David Molyneux, cabinet member for economy at Wigan Council, said: “These works are absolutely essential to ensure the safety of those using the bridge. I appreciate it will cause some disruption and would advise commuters to allow extra time for their journey and to take care when driving through the roadworks. Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to access the bridge throughout the works.”

The road over the bridge is a two-lane dual carriageway and the works will be phased to undertake the works on the eastbound carriageway and westbound carriageway separately and this will require the use of a temporary contra-flow traffic management system.

The work is being jointly funded through the Department of Transport (DfT) Challenge fund and Wigan Council.
